No More Tainted Pet Food: Using Homemade Dog Food Recipes For A Healthier, Happier Pet

There are many places to find dog food recipes if you are considering making your pet’s food. There are also important points to think about when you make their food like sticking to the recipe, talking to a veterinarian, and paying attention to how your dog reacts to the food.

Two common places to find dog food recipes are on the Internet and through your local veterinarian. The Internet is not always trustworthy though. You cannot be sure that someone who posted their own idea for a dog food recipe is the right meal for your dog. Some of the factors might include the type of dog that they have and the types of foods in the recipe. If the dog food recipes are coming from a credible place on the internet like an animal shelter, a veterinarian, or some other place you can trust then you most likely are safe to use the recipe.

The best place to find dog food recipes is through your local veterinarian. Your vet already knows your dog best. He or she knows their digestive tract and what kinds of foods you can start your pet off with and how you can transition your animal from traditional dog food to homemade food. Many veterinarians already have recipes they can give to you so you can go home and make your pets food. Working with your vet ensures the health of your animal.

Switching your dog over to homemade dog food is a big transition. Your animal may not take the food change very well at first. For instance, your dog may not seem as if they like it or they might not be eating as much. You will notice a change in their stools. Your animal may vomit for a couple of days because their digestive tract is not used to healthy food. Be sure during the transition your dog is getting plenty of water. One thing that might be recommended is that you slowly break your dog into the new dog food rather than do a total change at once.

When you make homemade dog food, even the vet will tell you not to change the recipe. You might think you are being creative or making your pet happy by adding bacon grease to the mixture, don’t. You also should not substitute foods within a dog food recipe. Stick to the recipe. If the recipes are too expensive for you then you might not be able to afford feeding your dog homemade foods. Many people have made their animals very sick by not properly cooking the foods to save time or substituting foods to save money. For your dog’s health, stick to the recipes.

Dog food recipes are fantastic when you find them from the right sources. You should only trust your veterinarian or a reliable source for a recipe and you should follow it exactly. The purpose of making homemade dog food is for your dog’s health. So you should follow the recipes and pay attention to how your pet responds.

My dog is a White coated Chichi. He almost died from eating dog food. he was still sick after eating the vet dog food. Finally, out of desperation i went to a Holistic Vet. After being treated for 1 m onth and givinhg him home prepared meals from chicken n rice or whole wheat bread he has gained some weight and is no longer sick. Homemade food is the best for your pet.

Great Video! I love everything about it, until you get to the RICE part. Rice is not good for your dogs. Please don’t give your dogs rice. Only Raw Meats, Fruits and Vegetables. Things to learn about yourself and animals: -Animal Cells, -Amino Acids,Proteins, DNA, -Digestion, -Conventional versus Organically grown, If you learn about these things you will see that they are all in common. They make up us and will help you live a healthier, longer, and happier life. Raw life is the best.

Your chi is cute. Mine was just diagnosed with luxating patellas. Does yours have that too? I noticed her limping and having a stiff gait in her back left leg. Mine is only 2.5 yrs old and does the same thing. I’m researching a good treatment for her w/o going the surgery route…

Here’s a step by step video on a recipe with info on varying the food as well and how to intro. the food to your dog. This is a very healthy recipe that would be pretty easy to make once you got used to it and you could make a week’s worth at a time and freeze it by portion.

The problem with homemade food for a dog (especially of this size) is it’s hard to measure the amount of crude protein, fiber, fat, and other essential ingredients that a dog NEEDS to have on a daily basis. Dog food companies such as iams, science diet, and purina have spent many a dollars to create the perfect balance of nutrients into a dogs/cats food. If you were to feed him nothing but people food on a short term basis, it’s not as bad, but long term it can have some ill effects. So please, just spend a little bit more and get a better brand of dog food, it’s better for you dog!!!!!!!!

this is my favourite recipe site http://www.rawfeddogs.net/Recipes

Honestly there is no need to cook, chop, grind or puree – just make friends with your local butcher!!

Giant breed dogs need to be eating about 2% of their ideal adult weight each day. For a bullmastiff this is between 41 and 59 kg – if you work this out out an average of 50 kg then your dog would need ‘about’ 1kg of food per day (50 x 0.02 = 1) Adjust the amount up or down based on your dog’s appearance and activity levels.

If you aim to feed over the course of a week or two about 2/3 meat and heart and the rest a combination of meaty bones and other organs then your dog will get everything it needs. Luckily being in Australia, roo is easily available, low fat and a great source of omega 3s. I buy roo chunks at petbarn – $20 for 5kg bags. This combined with chicken halves, beef or lamb heart and organs like liver and kidneys is the basis for my animals’ diet.

** millions of dogs the world over live long and healthy lives never eating commercial foods. don’t let anyone tell you that you need a science degree to be able to feed your dog.

You need more information to do this properly than you can get here. You need to decide if you want to cook for your dog, or feed him raw. There are books and websites that can help you decide. There are books and e-mail lists that can help you get started.

If you want to go raw, I like this list: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RAW-lite/ . The list owner, Carina MacDonald, has written a book called “Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy For You And Your Dog”… it is a good book for beginners.
