Spunky and the “apple a Day Dog Treat” Dog Food Recipe

My dog, Spunky, was put on a new diet last fall by our veterinarian who sold us the food. After five days Spunky became very ill. He was vomiting, eating less, became listless and staggered when he tried to walk. His veterinarian refused to admit that the new food was causing his illness. Spunky became so ill that he was hospitalized for five days and came to the point where we were told he was dying.

I insisted that we try to feed him some of his old food before we gave up on him. We visited the animal hospital and fed him small amounts of his old food. Within hours his bloodwork was back to normal and he recovered very quickly. Some damage to his liver, kidneys and gallbladder remained but these are problems that can be monitored. In my anger and despair I decided to publish an all natural cookbook of dog food recipes. Several months later the very food that made Spunky ill was added to the recall list and this only served to make me more aware that pet owners need to consider feeding their pets human grade food.

An Apple A Day Dog Treat

2 cups whole-wheat flour

1/2 cup unbleached flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1 apple, chopped or grated

1 egg, beaten

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

3/8 cup water

Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray cookie sheet with vegetable oil spray. Lightly dust work surface with flour. Blend flours and cornmeal in large mixing bowl. Add apple, egg, oil, brown sugar and water. Mix until well blended. On work surface, roll dough out to 7/8-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters of desired shape and size.

Place treats on prepared sheet. Bake in preheated oven 35 to 40 minutes. Turn off oven. Leave door closed for 1 hour to make the treats crispy. Remove treats from oven. Store baked treats in airtight container or plastic bag, and place in refrigerator or freezer.

Recipe makes 24 servings.

Pet owners who love their pets will no doubt be searching for new food sources. Remember that when changing your dog’s diet (no matter what the food source) that you need to introduce the new food carefully and in small amounts before actually making the switch. If you have any concerns about allergies and food sensitivity please consult your veterinarian before introducing human grade food.

Barker’s Grub : Easy, Wholesome Home-Cooking for Dogs

Canine Cooking That Will Have Them Begging for More

Which do you think your dog would prefer: dry kibble, mushy canned food, or a nice, nutritionally sound helping of Tuna Togetherness? Not surprisingly, most dogs would be happier — and healthier — with the latter, considering the dangerous preservatives, questionable ingredients, and mysterious flavoring agents often used in commercial dog food.

That’s why Rudy Edalati cooked up Barker’s Grub, a cookbook filled with wholesome, easy-to-prepare meals for your mutt or your pedigreed pooch — and you’ll find all the necessary ingredients in your fridge or at the local supermarket. She includes not only fun everyday meals, but healing meals for specific health problems, as well as special diets for different life stages, such as:
* Lo Mein Barking Style: the doggie alternative for Chinese takeout
* Beef Puppy Food: just the right mix for a growing dog
* Davie’s Juicy Jiggly-Wiggly Anemia Diet: a blood-boosting dish of liver, rice, and spinach

Barker’s Grub is informative (there’s lots of canine nutritional information to chew on), inspiring, and just plain fun. The recipes are simple and quick — after all, it’s not just about health and longevity, it’s about making the most of the time you and your dog spend together.

dog food recipe Questions & Answers

Question by antonios mama ?: Anybody have a homemade dog food recipe?
I currently feed my dogs Innova but I want to switch them to a home-made diet. Not exactly raw, but maybe cooked vegetables, chicken and some type of rice.

I just want to know if you can tell me exactly how much chicken to mix with how much rice. (eg. 2 cups rice to 1/2 cups chicken)

Also, do I have to add any supplements? I currently put a teaspoon of flaxseed and a teaspoon of sunflower oil on their food daily for their coats, but what about other stuff? If you could also tell me how much they cost that would be great. Thanks

P.S, all of my dogs range from 40lbs and up.

It’s very difficult to provide dogs with the necessary nutrition on a home made diet. It’s more difficult than doing so for a human. You should talk to your dogs’ vet about their health and their specific needs and your vet can suggest foods that will provide all the necessary nutrients.

Overall this book is GREAT. The information in the book is very thorough and my dog loves everything I’ve made using this book. However, for the main meal recipes, they are all kind of no-brainers. What the author could have done was just provide a list of ratios – so much meat, so much grain, so much vegetables, so the cook could mix-and-match ingredients. I could see people who are DEPENDENT on sticking to recipes being very limited by feeling they have to make these dishes exactly as spelled out, but in reality the author could have provided better instruction on being flexible as long as the right food-type ratios are stuck to.

There was some really good information in this book. There weren’t as many recipes as I would have liked but the recipes they have are excellent. Many of the recipes are geared to dogs that have heart problems or arthritis, etc. which was excellent for me. Excellent for anyone that does home cooking all the time for their dog because it is geared for a weeks supply.

I found out about this book from a holistic veterinarian. This is such a wonderful book, I have purchased now 5 copies as gifts for friends. The recipes are easy, wholesome, and my dog’s digestion (previously a problem requiring numerous visits to the regular vet and monster doses of antibiotics) has been excellent ever since she’s been eating this food, which she loves. I have recommended the book especially for people whose dogs have challenges, such as cancer, heart trouble, or arthritis. But even for perfectly healthy dogs, this is a terrific book.

This is both a useful and an important book. Pet owners and even many veterinarians have been bamboozled by the pet food industry which provides convenience for pet owners, but at the cost of feeding our pets what is basically chemically-laden GARBAGE, and I don’t mean garbage like leftovers, I mean chicken …, rendered god-knows-what and I won’t even go into what rendering is. There are some other books available on … about what is actually in most commercial pet food, what — legally — some of those innocent-sounding ingredients actually can be. Suffice it to say that it’s quite shocking and disgusting. Most people laugh at the idea of cooking for dogs, as if it’s some frou-frou whim, but really, if one thinks about it, dogs have evolved over many years to eat our leftovers — that is, food. Yes, FOOD!!!! This book is very helpful because cooking for dogs can be confusing (we’ve not been educated in our culture about what they can eat / what they’re allergic too or have trouble digesting, e.g., chocolate and onions are not good for dogs), and also, without the tips the author provides, cooking for dogs can be unnecessarily time-consuming. She provides an excellent variety of recipes — for different types and ages of dogs and different types of health challenges — in large quantities. Thus you can make a big batch and freeze it all, taking out to thaw a day or two’s worth of portions as you go. I zap it in the microwave for just a few seconds and add a splash of milk or rice milk if it comes out a little too hot. By the way, cooking for your dog need not be expensive. Some of the recipes in this book are (“Tuna Togetherness” comes to mind) but not all — there are also recipes with say, squash and peas and liver. By the way, this book has a charming cover. It would make a wonderful gift for any dog owner.

The author provides excellent information as to why commercial foods are not the healthiest diet for your dog. She also gave me the confidence to try this as I am not comfortable in the kitchen. Making meals for my dogs took some of the pressure off since I knew they would like everything I made! Plus, the recipes are very easy, though the prep work is time-consuming if you’re not an experienced cook.

Unfortunately, after several weeks of spending all of our free time in the kitchen or grocery store, my husband and I decided that we simply couldn’t keep up since we had to cook for four large dogs (ranging from 45 lbs.-80 lbs.). In order to do this, one of us would’ve had to quit our full-time job or make a career out of it like the author (she runs a dog catering business) to justify all the time and money spent.

If you have one large dog, or multiple small dogs, and you have the time and inclination to do this, then I would highly recommend Barker’s Grub. Otherwise, you can make these meals just for special times such as birthdays, obedience school graduation and holidays, which is what we plan to do.

I agree with Showtunes. You need to do research. Here is what I feed my dogs. I ran this by my vet but I would STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU CHECK WITH YOUR OWN VET before feeding them this diet as dogs are different and have different needs.

    FOOD
A 12 oz portion is suitable for one day’s ration for a 20 lb dog.
4 oz (1/2 cup) protein – any meat, chicken, fish or eggs (all cooked).
4 oz carbohydrate – for example cooked rice or grains, pasta, cooked cereals such as oatmeal, potatoes or even bread (packed tight when measuring). Dogs do not process fibre as well as humans so I mix white and whole grain.
4 oz vegetables – any cooked vegetables (obviously not potatoes or other high carbohydrates). Carrots, broccoli, turnips, green peppers, green beans, etc., but not onions which contain high sulfur content which is bad for dogs.
Simply mix the contents together or not as you choose.

While this basic diet is balanced it can be improved by some simple supplements.

    SUPPLEMENT
To mix the basic supplement use:
Debittered brewers yeast (B vitamins) – 2 cups
    Wheat germ – 1 cup
Desiccated liver powder (A, D and iron) – 1 cup
Bone meal (Ca and P) – 1 cup
Sunflower seeds, ground fine (E and B) – 1 cup
    Sodium ascorbate (C) – ½ cup
    Powdered kelp – ¼ cup

Mix together and store in a cool dry place (fridge).
To improve the diet quality add 1 tsp of the basic supplement for each 12 oz portion of the food mixture and 1 tsp flax oil.
