Product Description
Updated with the latest information on canine breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, this lavishly illustrated volume is a treasure house of information for dog lovers, owners, breeders, and prospective buyers. It begins with a detailed discussion of breed evolution, focusing on the physical and behavioral traits that distinguish one canine breed from another. The book’s main section profiles more than 150 breeds, arranged in the general categories specified by the AKC—Sporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group. Each profile tells how and why the breed was developed, and how selection to perpetuate specific traits affects a dog’s suitability as a pet. Advice for prospective dog owners will help them be sure they are choosing a breed that is compatible with their own situation and needs. They will also find information on each breed’s vulnerability to specific health problems, longevity, exercise needs, compatibility with children, and much more. Profuse illustrations include color photos of all listed breeds.

Nadja Christine Pretty Said: Love it! ( Aug. 2nd 2010 )
My 9 year old daughter loves this book. The pictures are great and the info box about every dog breed that comes along with text gives them a quick overview.
Very good book for that age.
andibaby Said: One of the best dog breed books there is... ( Jun. 24th 2010 )
I purchased this book for a class I took on all the different dog breeds in vet school. Although this book did not have every single breed we covered, it had the most information, pictures, and diagrams for the breed standards in each dog.
Dog Lover Said: Best Dog Book ( Mar. 20th 2010 )
One of the best dog breed books around with perhaps the best illustrations. This book not only contains the AKC breed information but does it more comprehensively. Instead of limiting itself to size descriptions of breeds by either height or by weight, so often done in AKC breed standards, this book gives an average height and weight range for each of the breeds. Great overall characteristic descriptions such as temperament, upkeep, genetic health problems, and form and function. Many highly illustrated dog books have great pictures of some breeds and unflattering ones of other breeds. The Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds has consistently beautiful pictures throughout.
If you are more interested in adopting one of the lonely little All Americans out there in shelters, this is a fun way to gather information about the heritage and personality that make up that little guy's background.
Sean Moore Said: takes the mystery out of buying a dog ( Mar. 19th 2010 )
This book was well organized and helped take the mystery of which dog breeds were right for my family when we were purchasing a dog. I more than paid for itself in that task alone.
P. Pasda Said: dog care according to the breed ( Mar. 13th 2010 )
THis book is a great collection of information about known existing breeds that will help people understand how to choose a puppy or grown rescue dog for their particular situation. I think in many case the bree definately dictates the way a og responds to a living situation and some dogs are meant for many people and some dogs are meant for just one owner. This is clear in many pages of this bok. Read it carefully and well and ou will find out how to know what breeds are capable of performing in their lives. It is clearly written and the theory presented so the reader can grasp the history and intent of each dog breed, with size, character and color determination and variation.Service Dogs (Dog Heroes)
